10 Budget-Friendly At-Home Activities for Kids

Winter’s chill and shorter days (or any day, really, let’s be honest) can make keeping kids entertained feel like a Herculean task. But fear not, mamas! These at-home activities for kids are low-cost, minimal-prep, and guaranteed to bring joy to those long winter days. They’re some basic ideas, that you’ll probably think—I could’ve thought of that. Buuuuut after this post, you’re going to do them with *flair* and freed up brain space.

1. Build a Fort

Nothing beats a classic blanket fort. Grab some chairs, blankets, and fairy lights, like the Crazy Forts Building Kit, to create a magical hideaway for the kids. Bonus points if you throw in some cozy pillows and a favorite book for storytime. Building forts also encourages creativity and problem-solving as kids figure out how to structure their masterpiece.

2. Indoor Scavenger Hunt

Create a scavenger hunt using household items or toys. Write clues on index cards and hide them around the house. Tailor the hunt to a winter theme for extra fun—think snowflakes or penguins. For extra ease, try the Toddler Scavenger Hunt Cards or Skillsmatics Card Game – Found It Indoor Scavenger Hunt for Kids. This activity promotes teamwork and gets kids moving.

3. DIY Obstacle Course

Turn your living room into an adventure zone with pillows, chairs, and tape. Create “tunnels,” “jumps,” and “stepping stones” for kids to navigate. It’s a great way to burn off energy! We use these cones and rings to make ours. You can even time each participant to add a competitive edge, encouraging physical activity and coordination.

4. Science Experiments

Try simple experiments like a baking soda and vinegar volcano. Or, for a more structured approach, check out the National Geographic Science Kit. It’s educational, entertaining, and uses items you likely already have in your pantry. Kids learn about chemical reactions while having a blast.

5. Dance Party

Crank up the tunes and let loose! A good ol’-fashioned dance party is a surefire way to lift spirits and get everyone moving. Add some flair with Disco Ball Party Lights or MOLLYBEE KDIS Dance Cards that give prompts to spark movement. Dancing improves mood and gets those endorphins flowing.

6. DIY Movie Theater

Transform your living room into a movie theater with blankets, popcorn, and dim lighting. Let the kids “ticket” entry for extra fun. Choose a winter-themed movie for a cozy vibe. Bonus: It gives you a chance to sneak in some relaxation.

7. Baking Together

Whip up some simple treats like muffins, crescent roll cinnamon rolls, buckeyes (here’s our favorite recipe). Keep. It. Simple. Kids love helping in the kitchen, and you’ll probably end up with delicious snacks to enjoy. Baking teaches kids measurements and patience while letting them unleash their inner chef.

8. Storytelling Games

Encourage creativity by taking turns adding to a story. You can set a theme (like winter adventures) and see where the tale takes you. We sometimes use these shadow puppets when we’re feeling like leveling-up or storytelling. This activity fosters imagination and verbal skills.

We love our Yoto Player. Not only does it have kid-appropriate radio and daily podcast, you can buy themed cards that kids can control themselves! We use this allllll the time.

9. Arts and Crafts

Create snowflakes out of paper, make salt dough ornaments, or try simple watercolor painting. I’ll say it again….KEEP. IT. SIMPLE. Crafting is a perfect indoor pastime that allows kids to explore their artistic side. Display their creations around the house to boost their confidence. Here are all our tried and true favorites.

10. Indoor Camping

Set up a tent or sleeping bags in the living room, turn off the lights, and use flashlights for a fun indoor camping adventure. Share “campfire” stories and snacks to complete the experience.

I hope these tried-and-true at-home activities with *flair* help you entertain the kids and keep your sanity, mama! If you feel like getting out, but staying inside, you may want to check out these posts:
