20 Family-Friendly Day Trips from Chattanooga

Have you ever hit that point where you just have to get out of the house, but the thought of packing for an overnight trip makes you want to crawl back into bed? Oh, same, friend. That’s why I’ve pulled together this list of family-tested, mama-approved day trips from Chattanooga—all within about three hours or less. No hotel required. Just grab some snacks, throw extra clothes in the car (because #toddlers), and hit the road.

Whether your crew loves to hike to waterfalls, explore hands-on museums, or just eat their weight in fudge in a Bavarian-style village, you’ll find something here. We’ve done most of these ourselves and can say that they’re totally worth the drive.

Indoor Family Fun (Rainy Day Magic & STEM-Approved Play)

For the days you need air-conditioning, snack-friendly lobbies, and hands-on learning that doesn’t leave your kids sticky…

1. U.S. Space & Rocket Center – Huntsville, AL (1 hr 45 min)

This is the place for aspiring astronauts. With massive rockets, space simulators, and an entire Saturn V rocket hanging overhead, kids can climb, touch, and imagine life beyond Earth. Bonus: the outdoor space shuttle playground is a hit even in cooler weather.

2. Fernbank Museum of Natural History – Atlanta, GA (2 hr)

Where else can you see life-size dinosaur skeletons and walk through immersive natural environments—all under one roof? The 3D theater and rotating exhibits keep things fresh for return visits, and the indoor play space for littles is a huge plus.

3. Tellus Science Museum – Cartersville, GA (1 hr 30 min)

This hidden gem offers fossil digs, a planetarium, and enough geology and transportation exhibits to fill an afternoon. It’s smaller than Fernbank, making it perfect for younger kids or shorter attention spans.

4. Tennessee State Museum – Nashville, TN (2 hr 15 min)

If you want free indoor fun (yes please), this is it. Their children’s gallery encourages touch-and-play learning, and the rotating history exhibits give older kids something to ponder. Plus, it’s right next to the beautiful Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park.

5. Adventure Science Center – Nashville, TN (2 hr 15 min)

This multi-story museum includes a giant climbing structure, a planetarium, and exhibits that explore the body, weather, and outer space. My kids ask to go back every time we’re near Nashville.

6. Discovery Center at Murfree Spring – Murfreesboro, TN (1 hr 40 min)

Hands-on STEM exhibits plus an indoor treehouse = perfection. It’s nestled next to a beautiful boardwalk nature trail if you want to squeeze in some fresh air before heading home.

7. McWane Science Center – Birmingham, AL (2 hr 30 min)

Think of this as Fernbank’s funky cousin. With four floors of exhibits, live aquarium tanks, and an epic IMAX dome, it’s a great all-day outing. Plan for at least 3–4 hours to soak it all in.

Outdoor Adventures (Fresh Air, Falls & Family Fun)

Sometimes the best reset is found in fresh air, waterfall mist, and skipping rocks with sticky hands…

8. Nantahala Outdoor Center – Bryson City, NC (2 hr 15 min)

Family-friendly rafting, zip lines, a riverside gear shop, and a casual restaurant all nestled in the mountains. The adventure options range from gentle float trips to exciting whitewater.

9. Lost Sea Adventure – Sweetwater, TN (1 hr 10 min)

A literal underground lake with glass-bottom boat rides. The guided tour is fun and just spooky enough to make it exciting for older kids.

10. Fall Creek Falls State Park – Spencer, TN (1 hr 45 min)

This park boasts one of the tallest waterfalls in the Eastern U.S., plus plenty of stroller-friendly trails and picnic areas. The new visitor center is super kid-friendly, too.

11. Rock Island State Park – Rock Island, TN (2 hr)

A family favorite! You’ll find beautiful waterfalls, swimming holes, and plenty of space to spread out for a family picnic. Bring water shoes for rocky creek exploring.

12. Helen, GA – 2 hr 30 min

This little Bavarian-style town is equal parts charming and quirky. In warmer months, tube the river through town. In cooler weather, browse candy shops and grab hot cocoa.

13. Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg & Great Smoky Mountains – 2 hr 45 min

From Dollywood thrills to Smoky Mountain trails, there’s something for every family here. Consider driving Cades Cove for wildlife viewing or walking the paved Laurel Falls trail.

14. Ocoee River/Cherokee National Forest/Hiwassee River – 1–1.5 hr

These rivers and forests are perfect for casual hiking, wading, and tubing. Even just parking near a riverbank and letting the kids throw rocks makes for a low-stress day.

15. Tellico Plains – 1 hr 45 min

Known for Bald River Falls (an easy roadside waterfall), scenic drives, and peaceful spots to recharge. Great for slower-paced days when you want fresh air without a hike.

Road Trip Must-Haves for Mama (and Her Crew)

Let’s be real—how we road trip makes or breaks the day. Here are a few items I always keep in the car that have saved my sanity more than once:

  • Kids’ Travel Trays – Great for snacks, coloring, and holding all.the.things.
  • Backseat Organizer – So your van doesn’t turn into a toy store explosion.
  • Portable Potty – If you know, you know. Especially helpful for waterfall trails with ahem no facilities.
  • Yoto Player – Keep them entertained with safe content with or without Wifi.
  • Ear Phones – Let them listen, but keep your quiet.
  • Window Shades – Because direct sunlight on a sleeping toddler? Nightmare.
  • Car Trash Can – To keep things neat and tidy.

Each of these has made our day trips smoother and more enjoyable. Add one or two to your Amazon cart and thank yourself later.

So, Where Will You Go First?

The best part about a day trip from Chattanooga is that you don’t have to overthink it. Choose your vibe—indoor or outdoor—and hit the road. You’ll be back in your own beds by evening, hearts full and memory cards full too.
