Dear Version of Me Who Thought Doing It All Herself Was the Answer

Dear her,

You were so capable.

I want to start there, because I don’t want to be condescending about this. You weren’t wrong about your capability. You could hold a lot. You did hold a lot. You just didn’t know what it was costing you.

You thought being capable meant not needing help

You believed — in the part you didn’t say out loud — that if you just found the right system, the right schedule, the right version of organized, you could make it all work without needing anyone.

So you closed every gap yourself. You handled the thing your partner forgot. You filled in what your kid left undone. You didn’t ask for help, because asking felt like evidence that you couldn’t handle it — and you were very committed to the idea that you could.

She was trying to hold something together. She was doing the best she knew how.

She was also slowly burning down.

The shoulds that ran everything

I should be able to keep this house together. I should be able to manage all of this without falling apart. I should be more patient. I should be able to do this — women have been doing this forever.

Those shoulds ran quietly in the background, like a program you forgot to close. And they framed every difficulty as a personal failure.

The house is messy because I’m failing. I snapped at someone I love because I’m failing. I’m tired all the time because I’m failing.

You were not failing. You were a person doing an unreasonable amount of work in an unsustainable way, and the system was failing you.

What I know now

Doing it all herself was never going to be the answer. Not because you weren’t capable. But because capability and sustainability are not the same thing.

You can be capable of running for miles and still need to stop for water. Needing support isn’t weakness. It’s evidence that you’re in a situation that genuinely requires more than one person to carry it well.

What I know now is this: the isolation of doing everything alone — stopping asking, stopping expecting, not even imagining that help could come — that’s what eventually breaks people. Not the hard days. Not the big crises. The steady, daily accumulation of doing it alone and calling it strength.

What actually changed things

It wasn’t a mindset shift. It was specific language for specific conversations.

Every time I tried to ask for help, I either couldn’t find the words, or the words started a fight, or we both ended up feeling worse than before we talked.
