How to Keep New Year’s Resolutions as a Mom

TL;DR

  • The one sentence that keeps a resolution alive on a sick-kid week is in the if-then section below, and it takes about a minute to write.
  • Fewer than half of people who make resolutions are still on track six months later, and moms get knocked off course more often.
  • Plan for the mornings that go sideways, because those are most of them.
  • Small, specific, mom-sized resolutions last longer than big ones.
  • The Mom-Life Simplifier turns your resolution into a system ChatGPT helps you run all year.

It’s January 6th, your resolution was to work out before the kids wake up, and a little one just climbed into your bed at 4:12 am and claimed your pillow. If you’ve ever wondered how to keep New Year’s resolutions as a mom, it starts right there, with a plan that expects the 4:12 am visitor.

I’ll go first: counting my macros is a resolution I’ve made and quietly dropped. I cared about it. My plan only worked on the days nothing went sideways, and in my house that’s roughly none of them.

How Long Do People Keep Their New Year’s Resolutions?

Most people don’t keep New Year’s resolutions for long. In a well-known study of resolvers, only about 40 to 46 percent were still on track six months later (Norcross et al., 2002, via the American Psychological Association).

The same research found something hopeful, though. People who made a resolution were far more likely to succeed than people who wanted to change and never set one, and only about 4 percent of that second group got there. So making a resolution helps. Keeping one as a mom takes a plan built for mom life.

Why Is It So Hard to Keep New Year’s Resolutions as a Mom?

It’s hard to keep New Year’s resolutions as a mom because most resolutions are built for a schedule you control, and your schedule gets rescheduled around everyone else’s.

The 5:30 am workout meets the kid with the fever. The read-20-pages-a-night plan meets the bedtime that runs until 9:14. The Sunday meal prep meets the birthday party you forgot was this weekend, the one you still need to buy a gift for.

Every one of those is a plan that didn’t leave room for your life, and you’re allowed to build one that does.

How to Keep New Year’s Resolutions When Life Gets Rescheduled

Keep New Year’s resolutions by deciding ahead of time what you’ll do when the plan breaks. Researchers call these if-then plans, and across 94 studies with more than 8,000 people, they had a medium-to-large effect on reaching goals compared with simply intending to (Gollwitzer & Sheeran, 2006).

Here’s what that looks like in mom life:

  • If a kid ends up in my bed and I miss the 5:30 workout, then I take a 15-minute walk after school pickup.
  • If bedtime runs long, then I read 5 pages instead of 20.
  • If Sunday meal prep doesn’t happen, then I make one big dinner on Monday and we eat it twice.
  • If my kid’s tantrum lasts an hour into dinner time, then we’re eating tuna on crackers.

Write yours in one sentence: If [the thing that usually derails me], then [the smaller version I’ll do instead]. That one sentence is what keeps the resolution alive the week the stomach bug comes through.

What Are Some Good Resolutions for the New Year?

Good resolutions for the new year are small, specific, and built to survive a hard week. A few mom-sized ones:

  • Move your body for 15 minutes, four days a week.
  • Read 10 pages before bed, or listen to 10 minutes of a book in the carline.
  • Plan dinners once a week instead of every afternoon at 5:17.
  • Put one thing on the calendar each month that’s only for you.
  • Hand off one recurring task to someone else in your house.

If dinner is the one you pick, the Meal Plan Machine is a ChatGPT setup that plans your week’s dinners and builds the grocery list in ten minutes or less.

What Is the 5 4 3 2 1 Goal Method?

The 5-4-3-2-1 goal method breaks one big goal into five time frames: where you want to be in 5 years, 4 months, 3 weeks, 2 days, and the next 1 hour. It’s often credited to Ryder Carroll, creator of the Bullet Journal Method (Goals on Track).

Five years can feel like a lot when you’re trying to make it to Friday (fair). So try it from the bottom up. Say your goal is to feel stronger:

  • 1 hour: put your sneakers by the door.
  • 2 days: block two 15-minute walks on the calendar.
  • 3 weeks: walk four days a week, with an if-then plan for the days you can’t.
  • 4 months: add two short strength workouts a week.
  • 5 years: be the mom who can carry the sleeping kid up the stairs without thinking twice.
